1. Select Oil: Every individual has a different hair type. So, using appropriate oil for your hair will fortify the benefits of the hot oil hair treatment.

Here’s a rundown on the various kinds of hair oils to improve different hair types.

  • Oily Hair – Use jojoba oil as the composition of this is more like that of our natural skin and hair oils. This will make your hair soft and light.
  • Oily Or Dry, Flaky Hair – Coconut oil can be used on all hair types. So, if you’re confused about which oil will suit best your hair type, this oil is your answer. It will provide your mane loads of shine and a majestic bounce.
  • Thin, Brittle Hair – Castor oil is often overlooked for its benefits for hair, due to its extremely thick and sticky texture. Castor oil is an answer to your problems of dry scalp, hair loss and hair thinning! It provides a great boost of strength to the hair and is great for giving you longer, fuller locks.
  • Dry, Frizzy Hair – Avocado oil contains extremely high content of monounsaturated fatty acids, and vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants. So, this oil locks in just the right amount of moisture in the hair and condition your hair to make it feel more supple and elastic.
  • Hair Loss Problems – For those who remain worried a lot because of hair loss, sesame oil is the answer. Its nourishing contents are believed to help slow down hair loss and successfully treat those suffering from thinning hair.

2. Wash Your Hair On The Same Day, Before The Treatment: The same day you plan to do a hot oil treatment on your hair, wash it to ensure it is clean. Moreover, avoid using any hair care products when you wash your hair, such as mousses, gels, hairspray or leave-in conditioner. Any build-up of product or dirt on the scalp will prevent the hot oil from penetrating your hair follicles.

3. Heat The Oil: In a saucepan, bring 2-3 cups to a boil. Take about 4 tablespoons (60 ml) of the chosen oil and put it in a small bowl or mug. Place the small bowl or mug in the boiling hot water on the stove.

Turn off the stove and allow the oil to sit for a few minutes until it is warm but not too hot. You do not want to burn yourself with the hot oil. Remove the oil bowl or mug with an oven mitt.

You may heat the oil in a microwave, but do it in short bursts of 10-15 seconds at a time, stirring in between; to make sure you don’t overheat it. You don’t have to make the oil steaming hot, just warm enough to massage easily through hair and scalp.

Tip: The purpose of heating oil in boiling water is to ensure that the warmth of the oil remains intact throughout your hair massage.

4. Prep Your Hair: Wet hair, if it is not already wet. It should be damp, but not soaking. Damp hair tends to open pores in your scalp. Open pores allow the scalp to absorb the goodness of the oil immediately during hot oil treatment. Thus, ensure that your hair is damp, not soaking, as you start the oil massage.

Tip: Why you apply this treatment on damp hair – Oil seals in moisture; if your hair is not damp, you are not supplying moisture to seal in. Also, the oil will not distribute properly, so you will likely apply more. You will end up with an oily mess that may provide some, but little benefit to your hair.

5. Use This Trick To Apply The Oil Right Way: Comb your hair first to remove any tangles. After combing it, neatly part the hair and apply the oil with some cotton (you may use your fingertips), one part at a time. Start at the roots and then spread it all along the length of your hair.

6. Massage Time: After having applied the oil, gently massage the oil into your scalp using fingertips. Do this in a circular motion. While working your way from roots to ends, massage all the hot oil into your hair. Do this for about 15-20 minutes.

Caution: Do not be too rough or apply too much pressure as that could damage the hair follicles and cause breakage of hair.

7. Steam It Up: Place a cotton towel in boiling hot water and wring it well after. Now, wrap your head and hair with the towel and allow it to sit for 10 minutes. The steam will hydrate your hair and make the pores in your scalp open up and soak in the oil properly in order to nourish your hair during the treatment.

8. Wash Your Hair Well: Use lukewarm water to wash your hair after allowing the oil to sit in your hair for about an hour. Mix your shampoo with some water and then apply it on your hair. This way you can reduce the chances of the harsh chemical present in the shampoo reversing the effect of the oil massage. Better yet is to use a herbal shampoo that is sulfate-free. You may or may not condition your hair, depending on what works best for you.

Tip: It isn’t necessary to wash your hair again after the oil treatment. As Washing too often strips your hair of essential oils. If you’re doing an oil treatment, you most likely have breakage and don’t want to risk worsening that. You could wash your hair afterward if your hair tends to be oily and you’re concerned, but you don’t have to.

A great hot oil treatment like Panchtatva with Hibiscus Oil, done once a fortnight will protect your hair from protein loss, and keep it smooth, shiny, and beautiful. Say hello to gorgeous, shiny mane, ladies.

Natural Beauty Tips:

  • Do not heat the oil for too long. Do it for a few minutes in the hot water until the heat is bearable. Check the heat with your finger and remove it when it is ready.
  • Use an unrefined, pure, or extra virgin oil.
  • To heat the oil, bring the water to a rolling boil. Turn the heat off after this or the oil will be too hot to touch.
  • Hot oil treatment works for men’s hair as well.
  • Adjust the quantity of oil you use depending on the length and thickness of your hair. This hot oil recipe is adequate for medium length hair.
  • You can add a few drops of peppermint oil, which is what menthol is derived from. The tingling sensation you’ll get is the peppermint oil stimulating blood to the hair follicles, increasing growth of hair over time. Remember to dilute the peppermint oil in the other base/carrier oils, as peppermint is an essential oil.
